1 in 8 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
Brest Friends was established in 2005 by Dr Houriya Kazim, the UAE’s first female surgeon, with the mission is to save lives by increasing awareness of breast cancer in the United Arab Emirates. For the last 10 years, Brest Friends have run the only breast cancer support group in Dubai where survivors meet once a month to learn, socialize and support each other. Brest Friends offers support for breast cancer patients by helping remove barriers such as limited or no health insurance, lack of transportation and childcare, or language and cultural differences.
In 2015, Brest Friends partnered with the Al Jalila Foundation to promote early detection of breast cancer, facilitate medical treatment and, most importantly, set up and fund locally-based research into the epidemiology of breast cancer in the UAE. In the UAE, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and with the average age of diagnoses 10 years younger than elsewhere in the world. These statistics reaffirm the critical need for research to keep up with the latest advances in treatment to save patients' lives.
Advances in research offer hope and healing to countless women diagnosed every year. Funds raised will be used to accelerate breast cancer research in the UAE.
